WATCH | Sam Fanning plays greatest leave of all time to stun Victoria with incredulous six
The old adage goes there are only two types of leaves in cricket: good and bad. Well, Sam Fanning just added a third kind to the dictionary in the Australian One-Day Cup on Saturday to cement his place in cricketing folklore for Victoria against Western Australia at the WACA in Perth.
Western Australia made light work of Victoria in their round seven fixture of the domestic One-Day Cup to keep their hunt alive of a spot in the finals while their rivals remained last with just two wins in the season. Bryce Jackson produced stunning returns of 4/40 in his 10 overs, including two maidens, to restrict the visitors to 230/9 in the first innings before Joel Curtis (91) and Cameron Bancroft (70*) ensured a comfortable chase with 10 overs to spare. However, arguably the moment of the chase came as early as the first over itself.
Cameron McLure had Western Australia opener Sam Fanning in his sights first up as he took the new ball for the navy-blue knitted outfit. The right arm quick steamed in from over the stumps on the fourth delivery and delivered a sharp length delivery angling across Fanning to leave him in two minds. Fanning pressed forward slightly but ultimately decided to leave the ball alone but the timing of the decision meant he failed to get the bat out of the way. Instead, the Kookaburra struck the back of Fanning's willow and sailed over the wicket-keeper's head, all the way for a maximum.
Twitterati was lost for words.
