Watch, KAR vs J&K | Rahul channels inner-volleyball player to hold onto sharp chance at slips
KL Rahul has always been considered a bankable fielder at slips, and he showed why during the final of the Ranji Trophy against Jammu and Kashmir in Hubli. The Indian opener showed great reflexes and presence of mind to latch on to a sharp chance in the cordon with his juggling effort.
But another century partnership between the returning skipper Paras Dogra, who retired hurt on the opening day, and Kanhaiya Wadhawan saw the side go past the 400-run mark among drooping Karnataka shoulders on the field. However, Shikhar Shetty produced that much-wanted opportunity, after the side toiled for 32 overs, to break the 110-run stand.
After completing two brilliant catches in the slip cordon on the first day, KL Rahul was yet again in the thick of things at the KSCA Hubli Cricket Ground. With wicketkeeper-batter Wadhawan erring in his footwork to rock back to a flighted delivery from the left arm spinner, the Indian opener was ready in anticipation.
The ball, after pitching on a good length, turned slightly away from the right-hander, and hit the face of willow as he attempted a late cut. The ball swiftly travelled to Rahul’s right, who showed sharp reflexes, to get his hands to it in the first place. The red cherry, then went up to his left, away from him after the initial contact but he remained calm and put his presence of mind to good use.
He immediately stretched his left hand to juggle the ball closer to him with his palm, imitating a setter in the game of volleyball. That gave him the much-needed time, while also bringing the ball close to him, as he completed the catch in the third attempt. He threw the ball in the air and lay down on his back in relief, as the wicketkeeper rushed to congratulate him, and the bowler celebrated with a prayer.
KL is always on!
