Match Report

India Women defeated Australia Women by 6 runs at Lord's to make their way to the semi-final stages. After being sent to bat first, the Indian team lost Shafali Verma to Kim Garth early in the game. But Smriti Mandhana was able to respond well with her elegant strokeplay. With Jemimah Rodrigues, Smriti was able to add 76 runs for the third wicket, when Yastika also lost her wicket early. India went on to score 46/2 in the powerplay, with Smriti Mandhana taking the control. 

Australia was able to fight back with its spinners in the middle overs, as Sophie Molineux dismissed Smriti Mandhana for 61, slowing down India's scoring rate. Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh were able to provide a late surge to the innings, as they added 42 runs in the final four overs. India went on to score 156/6 in 20 overs, a total which looked above par. 

Australia had a good start in the chase as Georgia Voll and Beth Mooney negotiated with the ball. But soon after, Renuka Singh took two wickets in quick succession. Ellyse Perry was able to rebuild the innings by scoring 48, as Ashleigh Gardner responded with some attacking strokes. The duo went on to add 54 runs for the fourth wicket, putting Australia back in the game. 

The turning point arrived in the 18th over, when Deepti Sharma trapped Gardner in lbw. The team now needed 18 runs off the last two overs, when Renuka’s accurate yorkers denied them from scoring. In the penultimate over. Radha Yadav took the wicket of Ellyse Perry, as Australia Women finished at 150/8, falling six runs short of the target. 

Player of the Match 

Smriti Mandhana was named as the Player of the Match, as she went on to score 61 runs off 44 balls. Her knock set the stage for the Indian team to post a competitive total.
