ISL 2015: Hume's hat-trick confirms Kolkata's place in the semi-finals
Three brilliant goals from Iain Hume provided Atletico de Kolkata with an emphatic 4-1 win over FC Pune City at the Salt Lake Stadium on Friday. With this win Kolkata became the first team to qualify for the knock-out stages, while Pune are left tottering at sixth in the points table.
Kolkata took an early lead in the game as Iain Hume scored his seventh goal of the season in the ninth minute. Sameehg Doutie played a delightful through ball to find Arata Izumi on the left wing. In a two-on-one situation, the midfielder picked out Hume at the far post and the Canadian forward blasted it into the top of the net.
Iain Hume created a wonderful opportunity for Borja Fernandez to score in the 16 minute. The forward delivered a looping cross for the midfielder, but the Spaniard could not keep his header down.
Pune came close to score an equalizer when Adrian Mutu struck the post in the 23 minute. Tuncay Sanli teed up Mutu inside the box and the Romanian forward's thunderous strike beat the goalkeeper, only to be kept out by the post.
Pune were starting to find their feet in the match, but could not find the goal they were looking for as the teams headed into the tunnel for the halftime break, with the scoreboard still at 1-0.
The home team doubled their lead at the start of the second half. Borja Fernandez played a wonderful lobbed pass, over the top of the Pune defence, for Hume to run on to. The 32-year-old year old was played on-side by Pune defender Manish Maithani and he found the back of the net with a magical volley on the turn.
Mutu struck the post for the second time in the match, his shot in the 54th minute was partially saved by Kolkata goalkeeper Amrinder Singh before hitting the post.
Amrinder made two quick saves in the 67th and 69th minute, first racing off his line to block a shot from Yendrick Ruiz and then saving a shot at his near post from Lenny Rodrigues.
At the other end, Borja Fernandes provided a miss of the season contender. Valdo, who came on as a substitute, picked out Borja with a square pass from the left wing. After lovely interchange of passes with Hume at the edge of the box, Borja's initial shot was saved by the goalkeeper. The Spaniard had an open goal in front of him from the rebound, but his shot went way over the bar.
Iain Hume completed his second hat-trick of the season in the 83rd minute and put the game to bed. Doutie grabbed another assist when he ran down the right wing and provided a perfect cross for Hume, at the far post, to slide it in.
Pune scored a late consolatory goal as Mutu conjured up a moment of magic. The former Chelsea striker danced through a host of Kolkata defenders, before finding the bottom corner of the net in the 86th minute of the game.
Kolkata's new signing Dejan Lekic applied the cherry on the top of the cake when he scored his first goal for the team with the final kick of the game. The Serbian striker ran through the right wing before shifting the ball on to his left and beating the keeper with a composed finish.
The match ended 4-1 and it has provided a big dent to Pune's hopes of the qualifying for the semi-finals. Kolkata on the other hand have the luxury of trying out different combintions, and resting their key players for their final league game.
