Ashley Westwood said he knew exactly the kind of challenge his side were up against as Bengaluru prepare to take on Sporting at the Fatorda on Sunday, where a win would send them top of the table. The Blues are yet to taste defeat in Goa. but Westwood insisted that past record count for little.

Bengaluru are coming on the back of a second successive win – a 2-0 result at Shillong on Wednesday and the Blues’ performance on the night left Westwood with a lot of positives to travel to Goa with. Udanta Singh and Kim Song Yong turned up with a goal and assist each while the defence didn’t allow the Lajong attack to string anything that looked like a threat.

Bengaluru went down 2-1 at home to a ten-man Sporting earlier in the season and while Westwood admitted his side wasn’t good enough on the night, Sunday would be a clean slate. “We didn’t really threaten their goal enough. They had two long-range shots and defended well. We weren’t good enough on the day. But tomorrow’s a fresh challenge, a fresh game. We also watched Sporting take on Mohun Bagan in a game I felt they should have won. They should have had a penalty they didn’t and kept knocking on the door till the end. So we know what we are up against,” said Westwood while addressing the press on Saturday.

The Blues are yet to taste defeat in Goa but Westwood swiftly brushed aside suggestions of his team’s impeccable away record here as an indicator of how things will shape out tomorrow. “A game of football is a game of football. We never really look back on past results or places we’ve won at. We don’t have any advantages. We’ve seen what happened at our home ground and this could go either way.”

On the injury front, Bengaluru received a hiccup and will be without midfielder Shankar Sampingiraj who limped out in the game against Lajong with a ruptured cruciate while striker CK Vineeth continues to recover from a groin strain. The hosts, meanwhile, will see the return of Densill Theobald who missed the 1-1 draw against Bagan.
