Indian Test Captain Virat Kohli beat Bollywood stars Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan to take the top place in the Forbes fame rankings for Indian celebrities for 2016. MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar are the only other sportsmen in the top-ten that is dominated by Bollywood big shots.

The Forbes' ranking list is based on 2 parameters that include estimated earnings that are entertainment related and estimates of fame. The time period is considered from Oct 1 to Sept 30.

Even though his estimated earnings (₹134.44 cr) are considerably lower than the two Bollywood stars, Virat Kohli leads the way when it comes to the fame rankings according to Forbes. As far as the earnings rank is concerned, he is ranked fourth behind the Khan duo {Salman Khan (₹270.33 cr)and Shah Rukh Khan (₹221.75 cr)}and Akshay Kumar (₹ 203.03 cr). His performance for the Indian and his IPL side Royal Challengers Bangalore have played a big part in his rise to the top spot.

Next on the list is Indian ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who is placed at Number 5 with earnings in the range of ₹122 cr. He too has a higher fame ranking that he owes to the success of his biopic "M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story" that was released in September 2016.

Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar is seventh on the list but he too has a higher fame rank than the others on the list.

Olympians PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik have made their debut on the list in 2016. The 100-man list also contains other cricketers, past and present, including Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin and Virender Sehwag, to name a few.
