In the morning, Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first. With only 12 players allowed to play and 11 to take the field, India left out Murali Vijay, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Stuart Binny, and Shardul Thakur.

Openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan got the Indians off to a good start and formed a 93-run opening partnership. After scoring a fifty, Dhawan retired out to give the others a chance to bat in the middle. KL Rahul also followed his partner soon and left for the pavilion after scoring the fifty.

However, skipper Virat Kohli did not had a good day in the middle as he fell for a 40-ball 14 off left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican. The spinner struck again after a few overs and castled Ajinkya Rahane for five. Pujara was the third Indian batsmen to retire out, and he left for the pavilion after making 34 off 102 balls.

Rohit Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha then formed a 47-run partnership to take India past 200 before leg-spinner Damian Jacobs struck to remove the wicketkeeper-batsman for 22. Rohit was then joined by Amit Mishra, and they made sure that there were no more wickets on the opening day of the two-day game. On the second and final day of the game, India will be looking to give their bowlers a run to acclimatise to the conditions.
