Kohli wants Daniel Vettori as India coach

Virat Kohli, Indian Test skipper and Royal Challengers Bangalore captain, has suggested the name of Daniel Vettori for the vacant seat of India coach. The former New Zealand spinner is currently the coach of IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore and Big Bash side Brisbane Heat.

The Indian coach’s seat has been vacant since Duncan Fletcher left the role after the 2015 World Cup, and Ravi Shastri has filled the vacuum in a director’s capacity. With the captain of the national side having a major say in the proceedings, as had been the case during Gary Kirsten’s appointment, it appears that Virat Kohli has thrown Vettori’s hat in the ring as per a report by Cricbuzz.

In fact, sources further confirmed that Vettori’s name was indeed in the mix but the board had made no mention of the same. With names like that of legendary batsman Rahul Dravid in the mix, Vettori will face stiff competition, but could bank on Kohli’s reference.

Vettori has been involved with RCB in a coaching role since IPL7 and this is his third season in charge of the Bangalore-based franchise. With India having a tight schedule since autumn, a coaching appointment could not be far away.
