Jayant Yadav praised by legends of present and the past

Yadav who had a 64-run partnership with Ashwin after India found themselves at 363/7 in the first innings of the match. The former scored a brilliant 35 (87) helping India finish the first innings with a score of 455.

"Jayant Yadav was very calm, showed great temperament (in batting). There is nothing hurried about his action and his two contributions with the bat were just brilliant. It was great to have that partnership with Jayant," Ashwin said as reported by Hindustan Times.

The 26-year-old then went on to pick up the important wicket of Moeen Ali in the English innings in 12 overs he bowled. Yadav also reciprocated praise for Ashwin saying that he keeps on telling the youngster on how to improve himself.

“He gave very meaningful inputs, telling you in a positive way of what you can do better,” Yadav said.

The Haryana-born lad, who has a double century in the Ranji Trophy, dug India out of a hole again in the second innings with an unbeaten 27 (69) to take India past 200. He made his impact with the ball in the second innings claiming 3/30.

He sent the hero from the first Test, Ben Stokes, back with just 6 runs on the board. Yadav also cleaned up the tail, trapping both Stuart Broad and James Anderson for single digits as India took a 1-0 lead in the 5-match series.

Indian Legend Sunil Gavaskar had earlier claimed that Amit Mishra was made into a "scapegoat" after the disappointing performance in the first match.

"It's surprising that Amit Mishra has been dropped. I think he has been made a scapegoat for India's failure to bowl out England in the 1st Test in Rajkot."

However, the 67-year-old has now done a U-turn stating that the 26-year-old belonged at the highest level of cricket.

"He (Yadav) batted sensibly. His partnership with Ashwin was a major factor in taking India past 400. In bowling, Yadav has a nice easy action, nice follow through. He also took a wicket, and contributed in the field too. If anybody does that in the first Test, he certainly belongs to the highest level."

It wasn't just Gavaskar who was praising the latest Test debutante as cricketers took to Twitter to complement Yadav on his impressive performance.

While it is still early to say if dropping Mishra was the right decision because of the nature of the wicket and the point that there were a lot of rough marks on the right hander's leg side, who do you think deserves a starting place in the side?
