Rahane feels momentum will be key against New Zealand
Indian vice captain Ajinkya Rahane feels that the team that gains momentum early on will hold the advantage while deciding the fate of the ODI series. The 28-year-old also said that India would continue with the aggressive approach that has been so effective for them thus far.
"I am really looking forward to the one-day series, especially after the Test series. But again it is important to start fresh here. Momentum will be the key. Winning the first match will be very important to be in that momentum," Rahane, whose brilliant 188 was overshadowed by Virat Kohli's 211, told journalists in Dharamshala.
The Mumbai-born cricketer said that the team is always very aggressive when it comes to their style of play. Focussing on their own strengths instead of trying to exploit the opponent’s weaknesses is another reason Rahane attributes to India's recent rich vein of form that included the whitewash of the Kiwis.
"I think discipline will be the key. The kind of cricket we played in the Test series, our intent was aggressive all the time. So here again our intent will be aggressive, play intensive cricket and play to our strength rather than focusing on opponent's strengths and weaknesses," Rahane added.
Rahane, who has played 29 Tests and 67 ODIs for the men in Blue, believes that it is a mental adjustment that players have to make when switching to different forms of the sport. He did emphasise that it would be important to make the adjustment quickly as that could be a decisive factor in the outcome of the series.
"I believe its completely mental adjustment because as a professional cricketer it is important for us to adjust to any format. It is important how we adjust mentally. Getting used to the conditions will be a big factor and we are actually experienced in that. So we don't think too much about the change in formats. It's all about how you deal with certain situations and factors. Mental adjustment will be key in ODIs," he added.
When asked about the absence of Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, and Ravindra Jadeja in the ODI squad, Rahane said that the presence of the new players would energise the team and would serve as a great learning experience for the players.
"I am really excited about the new guys coming into the team. It's really energising, everyone is looking in good shape. The guys have done pretty well in India A series and few guys did well in Ranji Trophy matches. It's all about giving the new guys confidence and opportunity at the highest level," the Indian vice-captain concluded.
