Kieron Pollard has been praised by the fans as he showed sportsmanship by avoiding a 'Mankad' in CPL against Guyana Amazon Warriors player Assad Fudadin. He maintained the spirit of the game as he declined to run out non-striker Fudadin who was far from the crease.
In the CPL match played between Barbados Tridents and Guyana Amazon Warriors, the latter won the match by four wickets but Barbados’ skipper Pollard won hearts by his act of sportsmanship.
The incident occurred in the 19th over of the game when Guayana Amazon Warriors needed eight more runs to win off 10 deliveries after scoring 152 for five in 18.2 overs.
The all-rounder is known for his brilliance on the field. In the next delivery, he got the chance to complete a mankad by running out non-striker Fudadin before the ball was delivered. But instead of sending him back to the dressing room, Pollard simply warned Fudadin to stay in his crease until the ball was bowled.
The Martin Guptill-led Warriors chased down the target in 19.1 overs and won the game by four wickets with five balls left.
The term 'Mankad' was coined in 1947 when great Indian all-rounder Vinoo Mankad ran out Australia's Bill Brown at the non-striker's end during a Test match at the SCG.
