ICC Test rankings | Steve Smith surges ahead of Virat Kohli
Following his magnificent ton in the first Test against India, Steve Smith has moved to a career-high ranking points total of 939 – the sixth highest of all time – in the latest ICC Test rankings. Ravichandran Ashwin has also extended his lead at the top of the bowlers’ chart with his 7-wicket haul.
Smith, who scored his 10th Test century as the captain in just 37 innings at Pune, went 66 points clear at the top of the ICC’s ranking for batsmen as his rival Virat Kohli, who scored 0 and 13 in the two innings, lost 22 points. Joe Root remained at third ahead of New Zealand’s Kane Williamson. Smith current points stand at 939 - the sixth highest of all time behind Sir Donald Bradman (961), Len Hutton (945), Jack Hobbs (942), Ricky Ponting (942), and Peter May (941).
Among the bowlers, Ravichandran Ashwin, who took seven wickets in the first Test, now has an 18-point lead over Josh Hazlewood and Ravindra Jadeja, who are both at 860 points. The Indian left-arm spinner, who was ahead of Hazlewood at the start of the series, lost 17 points after picking up five wickets in 57 overs in the first Test.
Stephen O’Keefe, who won the man of the match award with his figures of 12/70 at Pune, jumped 33 places up to 29th, his career best, in the rankings.
Mitchell Starc, who scored a vital innings of 61 runs in the first innings and then made 30 runs in the seconds innings, moved up to the fourth spot in the ICC’s rankings for the all-rounders in Tests.
