Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan has described former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly as one of India's all-time best captains. He has also heaped praise on Mahendra Singh Dhoni and cautioned his successor, Virat Kohli, not to take England lightly in the limited-overs series.

Sourav Ganguly had taken India to dizzying heights during his captaincy tenure. But few days back, former India all-rounder Ravi Shastri omitted his name from his list of all-time best captains while paying his tribute to MS Dhoni.

When asked to comment on Shastri's apparent omission, spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan decided to stay away from the controversy and said, "It's all about opinions and everyone has one. Maybe he has missed Ganguly but I can't speak for him,” reported PTI.

"Definitely Ganguly did a great job for Indian cricket after he took over. In my opinion, he's a great captain," Murali, the spin bowling consultant of the Cricket Association of Bengal's Vision 2020 programme, said.

Muralitharan also went on to praise Mahendra Singh Dhoni calling him as the best Indian captain.

“In my long cricket career, Dhoni is one of the best Indian cricket captains. The three years I played under his captaincy in Chennai Super Kings, I never saw any arrogance from Dhoni. He was always down to earth and was open to take advice from senior players like me and Michael Hussey. Being such a big star he always maintained a low profile,” Muralitharan told PTI.

Kohli will lead India in three ODIs and three T20I against the touring England side after taking over as skipper in all three formats.

“I have high hopes for Virat as he loves to take challenges and is a terrific batsman,” Muralitharan said.

“This England ODI team and Twenty 20 team is very competitive and totally different from the Test side. Kohli should not take the English team lightly and should always go to Dhoni for advice on the field. It is going to be a tough series for Virat,” he added.

The Sri Lankan applauded India’s move to play spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the limited-overs series against England.

“That is a very good move as India will not play any more ODIs until the Champions Trophy in June, so their inclusion will give them an opportunity to test themselves.”
