Williamson joins Kohli in top-five across all formats in ICC Rankings
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has entered the top-five of the ICC T20 rankings, and thus joined the elite club with Indian skipper Virat Kohli to be in the top-five across all formats. The jump has come after a productive series against Bangladesh in which he scored 145 runs in three matches.
Williamson’s 145 runs in the series helped New Zealand win the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh 3-0. On the back on that performance, he has moved up two positions to be ranked fourth in the T20I rankings for batsmen.
With this, Williamson joined Indian skipper Virat Kohli as the only other batsman to feature in the top-five of all three formats. Williamson is ranked fifth in ODIs Rankings and fourth in Tests. Kohli, who became the captain of India in all three formats after MS Dhoni’s decision to step down from limited-overs leadership duty, is the No. 1 ranked T20I batsman while he sits at the second position in both the ODI and Test rankings.
Interestingly, both Kohli and Williamson had started out captaining their respective sides in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2008 in Malaysia. India won the tournament when it defeated South Africa by 12 runs in the final.
New Zealand batsman Colin Munro has also made an upward progress in the latest T20I rankings. The southpaw smashed a 54-ball 101 in the second match, which has helped him jump 20 places to 19th position in T20 Rankings.
Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman has moved 10 places to 10th in the latest rankings. In doing so, he has also become Bangladesh’s highest-ranked bowler, leapfrogging Shakib Al Hasan who is 11th after rising three places.
After the series whitewash, New Zealand cemented their position in the T20I rankings. They gained one point courtesy of their series win and have a six-point lead over second-placed India.
