Dinesh Chandimal returns to Sri Lankan squad

The wicketkeeper batsman has resumed his training after missing out on the first Test in Galle. He remained hospitalized for four days after doctors had diagnosed him with pneumonia. He was recommended rest for a few more days after getting discharged.

In an interview with Cricbuzz, Sri Lanka's Cricket Manager Asanka Gurusinha said, “Chandimal looks fine for the second Test. He started training two days ago. I spent some time with him today and he has checked in to the team hotel.”

However, the administration remains cautious about his situation and his availability isn’t fully ensured as yet. “We will still monitor him and work with doctors. But the main thing is that Chandimal is happy and we will see how it goes and then make a call. But all in all, he should be fine,” added Gurusinha.  

The experienced Rangana Herath had to lead the side for him in the first Test after he had led Sri Lanka to a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh in March and things didn’t go well. However, the newly appointed skipper is expected to take over the reins now as the Lankans prepare for a do or die game for them in the series.

Sri Lanka’s batting has come under vile criticisms after Indian bowlers found it excessively easy against them. They were wrapped up with a day to go in the first Test and Chandimal’s return would definitely be a massive boost for their top order.

The right-handed batsman had things going for him in India’s last Test in Galle as his quick 162 not out had helped Sri Lanka massively to overturn a first-innings deficit of 193 runs. He has eight centuries and 12 fifties in 37 Test games for Sri Lanka at a decent average of 42.09.
