Ravichandran Ashwin has been awarded the International Cricketer of the Year while Shubhman Gill won the Young player of the year award at the CEAT Cricket Rating International awards 2017. The award was presented by former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar at the Cricket Club of India.

Ashwin was central to India’s domination during the successful home season, where India won 10 of their 13 Tests played against New Zealand, England, Bangladesh, and Australia. The Tamil Nadu offie has picked up 99 wickets in last 12 months and was the deserving winner of the coveted recognition.

Ashwin received the award from Sunil Gavaskar and Harsh Goenka, Chairman of RPG Enterprises, at a function held at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai.

During the occasion, Ashwin heaped praised on young TN off-spinner Washington Sundar for his impressive performance in the Indian Premier League while playing for Rising Pune Supergiant.

"Washington did really well in the Vijay Hazare trophy. I had heard from a couple of people that he is doing well. He has got a good idea of how to bowl in T20s and to bowl with the new ball is a massive challenge.

"The first scar which you will inflict will always have value and he initially bowled well. The pace and the length which he hit was very very critical," said Ashwin.

India Under-19 star Shubhman Gill, who won the Young player of the year award, had cracked two back-to-back one-day centuries against England in February and played a key role in India's 3-1 series win. He finished the series as the top run-getter by far on either side - 351 runs in four games at an average of 117.00.

Did you know, Ravindra Jadeja along with Ravichandran Ashwin became the 1st pair of spinners to be jointly ranked number 1 bowler in ICC Test Rankings history
