MS Dhoni’s 79 runs against Australia today has not only helped India post a commendable total, it also remained a special one for him as he hit his 100th international fifty. This was Dhoni’s 66th ODI fifty to go along with his 33 half-centuries in Test cricket and one 50+ score in the T20 format.

Coming from the mining state of Jharkhand, with a home-made batting and wicket-keeping technique, Dhoni was never believed to go all the way in international cricket. But he proved all the naysayers wrong as under his leadership, India won the top prize in all formats - the No.1 Test ranking in 2009, the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the World Twenty20 on his captaincy debut in 2007. Under the glowing sun of his leadership qualities, his batting capability sometime gets only a trifling mention. However, he provided many a brilliant innings in his career and 100th half-century in international cricket is just the mere reaffirmation of that.

Today, against Australia, Dhoni was welcomed through a rousing ovation from the fans at Chepauk after India found tthemselves in a spot of bother losing the top order in a heap. Dhoni is regarded as the undisputed king in this region because of his heroics with both the Indian national team and also with his former Indian Premier League team Chennai Super Kings. He didn’t disappoint his fans, albeit after a slow start to his innings. He played the second fiddle to the hard-hitting Hardik Pandya for quite a while but came into his own to take India from a precarious position to a commendable one.

Including this half-century, Dhoni has scored 66 ODI fifties while going with 33 Test and a lone T20 fifty. The 50 also helped him put all the retirement demands to the bed and he seems all set to continue playing until the 2019 World Cup in England.
