BCCI to make 16 times more profit during IPL than its international calendar
BCCI has projected a revenue of 2,017 crores from the 45-day 2018 IPL, which accounts for a 16 time more profit than they are going to generate from their International matches in the remainder of the year. The IPL has accounted for BCCI’s 60% surplus generation in the current financial year.
BCCI’s marquee tournament, Indian Premier League, generated a whopping 400 crores surplus from the 665 crores in the 2017-2018 financial year. But the world’s richest cricketing body is set to earn a staggering 2,017 crores from the 2018 Indian Premier League which will be 16 times more than the 125 crore amount the board is set to earn from the International tours and domestic tournaments in the coming financial year.
The new five year deal with Star India for 16,347 crores is responsible for increasing the net surplus of board increase threefold from 665 crores last year to 2,142 crores this year. The BCCI has projected an income of 3413 crores in the coming fiscal to a 1,272 crore expenditure that BCCI has to bear towards the game’s infrastructure and other heads. Earlier the allocation of surplus generation would have a ratio of 52:48 (IPL: BCCI) that will change to 80:20 (IPL: BCCI) this year because of the deal signed with Star India.
According to the Future Tour Programs, India is set to play in England, Australia, and New Zealand during the 2018-19 season while Zimbabwe and West Indies will be the only two teams to tour India in the next financial year.
These tours are set to earn India Rs 43.20 crore from media rights but will lose out onto nearly 80 crores overall as they are going to play in the country for just twice in the next one year.
“There is a lot of risk of losing money in a five-day game starting at 3 am India time (in New Zealand). Anyway, it will be a World Cup year by the time India travel to New Zealand. India will be playing just white-ball cricket after the Tests in Australia get over till the World Cup in England arrives. India will host Australia after they come back from New Zealand and will travel to Zimbabwe for three T20Is before the 2019 IPL,” a senior BCCI official told TOI.
