Sourav Ganguly believes it is very difficult to compare generations
Sourav Ganguly believes it is not easy to compare two different generation of cricketers and players should be given time before being compared. Ganguly, however, opined that Virat Kohli’s aggression helps take pressure off some of the players and India is grateful to have such a nice captain.
Cricket fans have the unique capability of holding their favourite cricketers on a high pedestal and can go to any extent of proving that. While many older generation of people still bat for Sunil Gavaskar as the best Indian cricketer ever to have graced the cricket field, 1990’s fans would never accept that and Sachin Tendulkar is still the man who signifies everything perfect about the game. While Ganguly agreed to the fact that every generation of Indian cricket produced so many star players, he was quick to add that the same logic makes the comparison a harder one.
"It is very difficult to compare generations. But every generation in Indian cricket has produced a champion, Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Tendulkar and I think Kohli is the one in this generation. This generation should be compared seven to eight years down the line because we became a Ganguly or Dravid or Tendulkar after playing for 15 years," Ganguly told a news channel, reported IANS.
"Virat Kohli being the senior most with Dhoni with 10 years or 11 years but the other boys whether its Rahane or Rohit or Murali Vijay have four or five seasons. I would give a little more time and see where they finish and then compare the generation."
Since MS Dhoni stepped down from the captaincy role in 2017, Kohli led the team with aplomb and also guided India to their first-ever ODI and T20I series win in South Africa. While Dhoni and Kohli have been more or less similar when it comes to tactical prowess, the latter is more of an extrovert and wears his heart on his sleeves. And the former Indian skipper, who has still been considered as one of the aggressive skippers of all-time, believes that India are lucky to have both Kohli and Dhoni in the team.
"I think Dhoni and Kohli are different personalities. Kohli was very expressive, and so was I. But Kohli has probably taken it one step further. I have to find out to whom he shows that fist to every time a wicket falls,” said Ganguly
"Dhoni was calm, that doesn't take the nervousness or pressure away from anyone. For Virat Kohli, it's his way of taking pressure away from everyone, and it was same for me. For Dhoni, it was to absorb. So every captain is different and I think India is very fortunate to have Dhoni and Virat Kohli,” he added.
