Carlos Braithwaite has stated that the team played well enough and were on track to chase down the target even though it seemed difficult until rain played spoilsport. He further praised Rovman Powell for his half-century even though they ended up losing by 22 runs to India who sealed the series.
West Indies lost their fifth T20I on the trot to the Men in Blue over the course of two years as they went down fighting by 22 runs in a rain-marred affair at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill. Two losses out of two in the three-match series means the series is already lost and they will only be playing for pride when the two sides meet again at the Providence Stadium on Wednesday.
Losing the toss and being handed the ball, the Carribean bowlers struggled against the openers as they put up a stand of 67 for the first wicket at a good strike rate. However, they clawed their way back into the game with some quick wickets but 22 runs off the final over propelled India to 167/5.
Coming into bat, after a few wobbles the team needed 70 runs to win with four and a half overs remaining and hard-hitting Kieron Pollard and Shimron Hetmyer on the crease. However, it started pouring and with four wickets already down and a steep required run rate, the DLS Method declared India as winners by 22 runs.
“Really don't think it went wrong. Didn't have the start with the ball we wanted but we pulled it back. Had a solid base with the bat, backed ourselves to get 70 off 26 even though it's a difficult task,” skipper Carlos Braithwaite said in the post match presentation.
After the openers had gone out for cheap, Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell provided stability to the innings with a 76-run stand. It was Powell’s explosive 54 off 34, laced with six fours and three sixes, that stood out. This was the 57th loss in the format for the two-time World Champions in T20s, the most by a team level with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
“Well played by Rovman. Communication with senior guys, the target we had, wanted Pollard to come in later. Our lineup is flexible enough. Batting wise, it's a lot closer to where we want to be. Consistency is what we're looking for. If we can continue restricting teams to 160. Strike rotation continuously needs to improve,” Brathwaite concluded.
