Reports | Waqar Younis set to be appointed Pakistan’s new bowling coach

Waqar’s chances of being named bowling coach appeared strong after another former Test bowler Muhammad Akram withdrew his application. Meanwhile, the PCB panel, headed by Intikhab Alam, did not invite another former Test pacer Jalaluddin, a qualified level four coach, for the interview process.

“If they treat their master coaches like this and ignore and disgrace them, then Pakistan cricket will not move ahead,” Jalaluddin told PTI in Karachi.

The panel has also begun looking into candidates for the position of head coach. A reliable source said that Misbah is a strong contender for the job, while former Test opener Mohsin Khan (in person) and former Australian cricketer Dean Jones (via Skype) also gave their interviews. It is understood the appointments for the assistants to the head coach – batting coach, fielding coach, fitness and conditioning trainer – will be made with the consent of the new head coach.

Mohsin, who has remained chief selector in the past, was Pakistan’s interim head coach from 2011-12. The team won three straight Test series under him, including a 3-0 whitewash of England in the UAE, before the board removed him to bring in Australian Dev Whatmore. Mohsin has also coached the Pakistan junior and ‘A’ teams in the past, while neither Misbah nor Jones have any prior coaching experience although the PCB has asked for three years experience in the conditions set out for interested candidates. Former West Indian fast bowler Courtney Walsh is also said to have applied for the position of head coach.
