WBBL 2019 | Sophie Devine named WBBL player of the tournament
Kiwi all-rounder Sophie Devine has been named as the player of the tournament for WBBL 2019 following her outstanding performances with both bat and ball which has propelled the Adelaide Strikers to the finals. She was closely followed by Beth Mooney and Danni Wyatt at 35 and 33 votes respectively.
As Women’s Big Bash League 2019 enters the much-awaited finals weekend, after 56 gruelling encounters, New Zealand and Adelaide Strikers allrounder Sophie Devine bagged the title of player of the tournament for the season. While the Kiwi’s all-round performances have booked a birth for the Strikers in the knockout, Devine looks to break the record of most runs scored by a player in a single season of the WBBL.
Devine earned votes in 12 of the 14 matches she played, finishing 13 clear of Brisbane Heat's Beth Mooney (35 votes) and Melbourne Renegade's Danni Wyatt (33). Votes were awarded on a 3-2-1 basis by the standing umpires at the end of each match meaning a player can receive up to six votes per match.
The New Zealand allrounder stands at the top of the run-scorers’ list, as of now, having amassed 699 runs, which includes 8 half tons at a strike rate of 130.16. Devine also tops the six-hitters list with 28 under her belt. Coming to the wickets’ column, she has bagged 16 wickets with an impressive economy of 6.35.
While the Strikers have two more encounters this season, if they make it to the finals, Devine will be looking to surpass Ellyse Perry’s last season tally of 777 runs to become the player to have hammered most runs in a single season.
