There is no doubt that MS Dhoni’s fans - and he has an army - who love him to the core, but there have been some who always try to get in touch his feet on the field. While that is a common occurrence now, Dhoni showed sweet patriotism as he took the flag off the fan’s hand when he touched his feet.

Dhoni has been conferred with an honorary Territorial Army rank in the Indian army’s elite Para Regiment and as many close to Dhoni say, he slept with his army uniform on the day he received the honour from the President of the country. He still wears the camouflage gloves and his parade before receiving the Padma Bhushan is one of the most hair-raising moments he has given to the country. So, you would naturally expect him to give the first respect to the flag before anything else and he did.

During the New Zealand innings, a fan, with the national tri-colour, suddenly ran towards the wicket-keeping area to touch MS Dhoni’s feet. Dhoni, who had seen these moments so many times in his life to be bothered about, didn’t lose the calm, but he didn’t waste a single second to take the flag off the fan’s hand as it was touching his feet.

He certainly could have been carried away and asked the security guys to get hold of the fan immediately, but he did what he actually had to first, giving the due respect to the national tri-colour. That gesture touched the heart of commentator Deep Dasgupta, who was on the air when the host broadcaster showed the footage when Dhoni was in the middle.
