Hardik Pandya stripped off Khar Gymkhana membership after off field antics
Hardik Pandya has lost his honorary membership with Khar Gymkhana in Mumbai due to his the recent comments that he made on popular talk show - Koffee with Karan. Pandya, along with India teammate KL Rahul, were banished from the ODI squad in Australia and are suspended until further notice.
After the Mithali Raj-Ramesh Powar saga, the latest controversy to emerge from the Indian cricketing world is the Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul fiasco. The duo were involved in a rather defamatory interview with popular Bollywood director, Karan Johar, on his talk show ‘Koffee with Karan’ which was aired a few weeks ago. Ever since the show went live, there has been a huge backlash on the two cricketers, especially Hardik, for his insensitive comments towards the opposite gender which has caused Indian cricket massive embarrassment on an international stage.
After being recalled from the ongoing ODI series in Australia and suspended for the upcoming tour of New Zealand, the latest shortcoming for the Indian all-rounder came from Mumbai’s popular club - Khar Gymkhana. The senior officials from the Gymkhana stripped Pandya off the three-year honorary membership that he was bestowed with earlier.
"Our 4000 member strong social media handle has received a lot of outcry against Hardik Pandya and his comments. They, particularly the women members wanted the club to take some action and be pro active. So in our managing committee meeting, we decided to revoke the three year membership we had given him last October," Gaurav Kapadia, Khar Gymkhana Gen Secretary told India Today.
Khar Gymkhana has awarded honarary club membership to reputed sportsmen from Sachin Tendulkar, Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, Sania Mirza, to Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal as well in the past.
Pandya had earlier lost a sponsorship deal with Gillette due to his comments on the show. Prior to the whole controversy, the Mumbai Indians player was considered as the poster boy of Indian cricket alongside the likes of Virat Kohli and other senior players.
