The Black Caps eked out a gritty win against the Proteas on Wednesday riding on the back of a match-winning century from skipper Kane Williamson. His unbeaten 106 including his heroics in the last over were the most crucial part of New Zealand’s victory.

However, leg spinner Imran Tahir had apparently managed to get him out in the 38th over of the innings when he had edged a ball that was caught by wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock. There was a loud appeal from the bowler but the umpire declared him not out. The Proteas decided not to take a review but replays later showed there had been in fact a faint edge. Batting on 76 back then, he would add on 30 more runs to earn a victory for his team.

“Why didn’t Kane Williamson walk,” tweeted Paul Adams, a wrist spinner himself who had represented South Africa in 24 ODIs. "If Kane Williamson was Mankad after he didn’t walk. Would he be upset,” he added in another tweet.

When asked about it, Williamson said he was not aware the ball had come off his bat and had he been given out, he would have reviewed the decision. Hence, he did not have any reason to walk off. Meanwhile, South African skipper Faf du Plessis also admitted to not having any idea that Williamson had actually edged the ball and hence, he had not taken the review.

“We weren’t aware of it. I think I was at long on at the time, and Quinny is the closest to the action. He’s always my go-to man. I just thought it was a plain miss. I just heard about it now at the post-match that he said he had a nick on it. But even Kane said he didn’t know he had to fine tune it. He would have referred it. But that’s not where the game was won and lost,” he said in the post-match press conference.
