439 overseas players register for BPL special edition player draft
Bangladesh Cricket Board has announced that as many as 439 overseas players have registered themselves for the special edition of Bangabandhu BPL which will be organised by BCB alone. All seven teams in the competition belong to BCB as the board has cut ties with the franchises last year.
After Bangladesh Cricket Board's failure to resolve the issues with the franchises, who demanded more money from the board, the BCB had decided that it would host the tournament by themselves. The initial date planned for the tournament was October 6 but now Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan announced that the special edition of Bangladesh Premier League will get underway on December 11 for which as many as 439 overseas players have registered themselves for.
"We have said it earlier that we are going to do it [special edition of BPL] on the occasion of 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. We are not going to arrange it as a franchise-based competition, rather BCB will arrange the tournament. We will look for a sponsor for every team and if we get, then we can take them as a sponsor. But all the teams belong to BCB. That is the main thing," BCB president Nazmul Hasan told reporters at the ceremony, reported Cricbuzz.
As announced, the teams that will be taking part in the league are Jamuna Bank Dhaka Platoon, Premier Bank Khulna Tigers, Rajshahi Royals, Rangpur Rangers, Sylhet Thunder, Cumilla Warriors and Chattogram Challengers. The seven teams will have the opportunity to pick players on November 17 from a players' draft event to be held in Dhaka.
In the draft, there will be a total of 181 local players and 439 overseas players there to be picked. The local players are categorised in six different categories with Mashrafe Mortaza, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Tamim Iqbal in Grade A+ category, having a price tag of TK 50 Lakh each. This year's tournament will also be a commemoration of Bangladesh's father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's 100th birth anniversary. The tournament was originally scheduled to start on December 6 but the fall out with the franchises, and the fact that the BCB wanted to do everything on their own, forced them to delay the start of the tournament by five days.
