Bharat Arun has lauded the character of the Indian pace bowling unit while applauding Mohammed Shami's seam position which the former described the best currently. The Indian bowling coach has also added that Ishant Sharma's experience at the top level has helped him become the leader of the pack.

His propensity to bowl one bad ball too many might have been a huge cause of concern to manage Mohammed Shami, but there is no doubt about the fact that once he hits the stride perfectly, he is probably the most dangerous bowler in the world. Very few bowlers could keep the seam upright and then suddenly, moves the ball back in with the old ball. That often confused the batsmen and on Day 4 and 5 wickets, he became a phenomenon for the Indian team. It has forced Dale Steyn to call Shami "currently the best pacer" and Arun is definitely proud of Shami's discipline.

"Shami has always had the speed. It's not fair to compare but if you look at bowlers all around, Shami's got probably the best seam position. And one way to maintain the speed is he's spent a lot of work doing his fitness. There is a perfect balance between fitness and the bowling he does. I think that works very well for Shami and that's the secret behind it," Arun said in the post-match press conference, reported Times of India.

While Shami was the wrecker in chief in the second innings, the significance of the pace-bowling unit can be gauged from the fact that not a single over was bowled by a spinner before lunch on Day 3. It was the representation of a sudden paradigm shift in Indian cricket, something that Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma are very much a big part of.

"Ishant is probably the most experienced bowler we have. He has played over 90 Test matches. He felt that he needs the batsmen to play a lot more. It was about him trying to experiment with different angles. What he's doing now, suits his bowling best," the bowling coach said.

"Umesh showed a lot of character in coming back. But then that's also an embarrassment of riches (with Bumrah on his way to recovery). You have five fast bowlers (Buvneshwar Kumar) who are ready to play for the country. And over a period of time, if you can manage the workload well, we can ensure that each one is nice and fresh for every game that we play.

"I think at present we are the no. 1 team in the world. Getting there is difficult, staying there is even more difficult. I think to do that over a period of three years, you need to stay constantly hungry," Arun said after the match," the former pacer concluded.
