IND vs BAN | D/N Test is win-win only when standard of cricket isn't compromised, feels Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar believes that the D/N Test and the idea of pink-ball cricket will be successful in bringing large crowds only if the standard of cricket is maintained at the same level as that of the red-ball cricket. India will make their pink ball debut against Bangladesh in Kolkata tomorrow.
Sachin Tendulkar has backed BCCI President Sourav Ganguly's idea of revolutionizing Test cricket in India by introducing the D/N Test. Tendulkar believes that D/N Tests will attract large crowds in the country and will make Test cricket interesting again but for that, the standard of cricket being played should not fall. The quality of cricket being played is paramount in the resurgence of Test cricket according to Tendulkar.
"The whole thing is to bring in more people in the stadium adds a new element to Test cricket. That is important but at the same time, I feel we should also evaluate after the game, how much dew was there and whether cricket -- the standard of play -- was compromised there," Tendulkar told ToI.
The dew factor is turning out to be an area of constant debate as the pink ball will be difficult to grip for the spinners and there are chances of the ball becoming dirty and the ball not being visible due to the dew factor. Tendulkar believes that it will be great if the dew factor is taken care of so that there is proper competitive Test cricket.
"I think there are two sides to it. One is to bring more spectators, but also at the same time, not compromising the standard of play. If the ball starts getting wet and if the game starts getting affected, then I think we need to sit back and decide what we want to do. If both these things come together then I think it's a win-win story," the maestro reckons.
"But if there's going to be some dew and if those elements don't allow you to produce good cricket, then there could be a meeting where they can discuss and do a post-mortem on how the event was.," he added.
Overall Tendulkar is extremely happy that India as a nation have embraced the idea of the pink-ball Test and is looking forward to seeing how the team performs in these new unknown conditions.
"It's a good thing. We've shown that we also as a nation want to move forward and try out new things. We try and then we see whether it's successful or not. Success should not be just measured by the number of people inside the stadium. I think that is just one aspect," he asserted.
The SG pink ball will have a more pronounced seam and will move a lot more than the traditional Dukes and the Kookaburra ball especially under lights. Tendulkar is excited by the prospect of seeing the likes of Mohammad Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav create havoc with the pink cherry.
"We've got all three bowlers who are bowling 140kph. It's not so often that we get to see all quicks bowling in 140kph and also bowling well. The seam position is really nice. And the areas that they are hitting consistently is very good. They have done a very good job. I think it's lot to do with fitness. If you are fit, then you are able to bowl longer spells. I think what is happening is that most of the teams are not batting that long. I don't think anyone has batted for a day and a half, right?" he concluded.
