IPL 2020 | Excited to come as an experienced player in IPL, says James Neesham

James Neesham, who made his New Zealand debut in 2012, was part of Delhi-based franchise in 2012 but could not justify his explosive persona on the ground and hence, was not retained by the side. Neesham was bought by KKR for the 2015 edition but could not take part due to an injury. Since then, the 29-year-old has had quite an interesting journey as he was not picked for the 2015 World Cup, contemplated retirement after the 2017 Champions Trophy before becoming an integral part of the Black Caps ODI team and almost won the World Cup last year.

After KXIP included Neesham in their long list of overseas recruits, Neesham stated that he is excited to be part of this year’s IPL with a steadier head. The all-rounder insisted that he did not know much about his game during his first stint in IPL but now has the adequate knowledge to succeed in IPL. He further added that he hopes to share his knowledge with the youngsters in the squad. 

"It is my first time getting involved in a long time. and as an experienced player. Last time I played for Delhi, I was young and talented but didn't really know much about my game," Neesham told PTI.

"I did not know what I needed to do to succeed. It was a challenge back then. This time I have come with a steadier head and knowledge under the belt and hopefully, I can pass that knowledge to some of the younger guys in the squad. Really excited about our team, we got some of the biggest names in the world in Chris Gayle and Glenn Maxwell and it is a team that can certainly win a lot of games and the tournament."

New Zealand is one of the least affected countries by COVID-19 and had even reported zero cases before the virus resurfaced. Neesham revealed that the restrictions were tough and did not allow him to practice his skills, so he focused on remaining fit. 

"The focus was to get as fit as I have ever been. Unfortunately, with the restrictions, there has not been enough opportunities to hit and bowl a lot of balls, so looking forward to that after quarantine," he said.
