Michael Atherton has claimed Virat Kohli’s role in promoting the red-ball format of the game and leading India to great heights as the skipper will ultimately be remembered as his greatest contribution. The Englishman went on to wish good luck upon Kohli as well as India’s head coach Rahul Dravid.

Virat Kohli over the past decade and a half has emerged as one of the greatest batsmen to have played the game of cricket, scoring over 23,000 runs in the international arena. However, what has driven him to the limelight time and again has been his commitment to his team and the will to play Test cricket at the highest level. The 33-year-old served as the captain of the Men in Blue for a record 68 Tests, winning 40 of them and establishing himself as the most successful Indian skipper ever by a mile.

This passion for the all-whites has earned Virat Kohli many admirers throughout his career, with former England captain Michael Atherton being one of them. A flamboyant batsman himself in his peak, Atherton was all praise for the Indian stalwart.

"I am a big admirer of his cricket, his batting and the way he has driven the Indian Test team forward as the captain and the way he has promoted Test cricket as well, I think that will be his great legacy," Michael Atherton was quoted saying on the Sony Sports network.

However, Kohli has been enduring an extended lean patch, having failed to score an international century since November 2019. Nevertheless, he has been instrumental in producing key results with the aid of head coach Rahul Dravid, and Atherton was quick to wish the duo good luck in their respective professional careers.

"I know Rahul Dravid a bit better than Virat Kohli. It was nice to chat with them both. Rahul I played against and I have a very high regard for him. I wish him well as the coach of the Indian team and I hope Virat, after a couple of difficult years with the bat, can rediscover his best form," he stated.
