Australian pacer Spencer Johnson incurred a bizarre toe injury that left him out of the Brisbane Heat Playing XI for their initial couple of Big Bash League encounters. Four sports doctors have failed to determine the root cause of the injury, leaving the pacer’s future in jeopardy.

The left-arm quick returned to action on Thursday’s clash between the Brisbane Heat and Perth Scorchers. Although he scalped a four-for, conceding just 20 runs in full quota - his career-best BBL figure - the Heat suffered a 33-run loss.

Johnson opened up on his bizarre injury after his scintillating bowling performance against the Scorchers and expressed that no one was sure about the perfect healing procedure.

"I snapped my tendon in a Shield game about a month ago, and to be honest, we still don't really know how it's happened, or why it's happened. It's such a bizarre injury. Four surgeons have looked at it, four sports doctors have looked at it, and they're all mind blown. We've come up with a decent method to strap it, and hopefully that should be right for the rest of the season,” Johnson cited.

Johnson snapped his tendon of the right toe ahead of the BBL season and missed the first two games. The sports doctors and the surgeons were perplexed by the mystery injury but the young gun was seen strapped his right toe to manage the workload.

"It is such a bizarre thing, I could wake up tomorrow and it could be all right," he said. It felt really good out there today, and we're looking after it, we'll manage it. It feels a bit weird we're talking about a third toe.”

Johnson also earned an IPL contract with the Kolkata Knight Riders during the mega auction in Riyad after shouldering along with the Gujarat Titans last season. Previously, touted as the next big left-arm pacer from Australia, the 29-year-old will be looking forward to manage his workload in a unique way and continue with his impressive bowling performance.
