Wanindu Hasaranga resigned as Sri Lanka's T20I captain
All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has resigned from the T20I captaincy of the Men's Sri Lankan national team. He faced scrutiny following Sri Lanka's poor performance at the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, where the team failed to reach the Super 8 stage, managing only one win in four games.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board took to its official website and informed about Hasaranga’s resignation. They stated, “ Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to inform the public that National Men’s T20I Captain Wanindu Hasaranga has decided to resign from the captaincy.”
Wanindu Hasaranga resigned through a letter to the SLC, mentioning, “ Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always.”
The 26-year-old took over the T20I captaincy from Dasun Shanaka just last year and captained Sri Lanka in ten T20I encounters. During Hasaranga's brief tenure, Sri Lanka clinched victory in six matches while conceding defeat in four.
Hasaranga's resignation comes after Sri Lanka’s head coach Chris Silverwood bid adieu from his role, following the team's elimination from the group stage in the ICC World T20 last month. Silverwood was been in charge of the side in all three formats since April 2022.
The T20 World Cup 2024 marked Sri Lanka's second consecutive disappointing tournament, following their ninth-place finish in the 2023 World Cup. In the T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka suffered defeats to South Africa and Bangladesh in Group D, finishing three points behind second-placed Bangladesh and exiting the competition, failing to qualify for the Super Eight Stage.
