Consistency is a tough ask when balancing risk and intent on the cricket field. Sanju Samson’s bold approach cost him as he fell to Marco Jansen for a golden duck in the second T20I against South Africa at St George’s Park, Gqeberha, ending his streak after back-to-back T20I centuries.

The toss favoured South Africa captain Aiden Markam and the decision to field first under overcast conditions paid off rich. Marco Jansen, renowned for his new ball exploits, found the right line and length early and did the talking with the ball in the first over itself. Centurion from the previous game Sanju Samson’s stay lasted only three balls, courtesy of a peach from the tall lanky pacer.

Samson looked to make room by shuffling towards the leg stump line from the second ball itself before it cost him big time. Jansen bowled a fuller than a good length delivery at the middle stump line that seamed enough to beat Samson’s inside edge and knock the leg stump. The Kerala batter intended for a lofted drive but played the wrong line after misjudging the variation, leaving him in tatters. Seeing Samson’s back-to-back tons get followed by a golden duck, the Twitterverse felt for the batter.

Comebacks should be better than the setback and Jos Buttler perhaps aimed to do so on Saturday after missing a majority of the summer. However, the outing wasn’t rosy for him as Gudakesh Motie’s outstanding grab removed him for a golden duck in the first T20I between England and West Indies.
