WBBL | Deandra Dottin stars as Renegades trump Stars by four wickets to pocket Melbourne Derby
Melbourne Renegades beat Melbourne Stars by four wickets in a Women’s Big Bash League match. Deandra Dottin picked up three wickets to restrict Stars to under 150 before playing a brief cameo with the bat to take Renegades home in the Melbourne Derby as the side rose to second in the points table.
After being put into bat at the Junction Oval, Stars had a slow start, ending the four-over mark at 22/1 with veteran batter Meg Lanning falling in the last ball of the first powerplay. Though fellow opener Rhys McKenna kept her side afloat with a run-a-ball 32, Stars needed someone to push their run rate up as they sat at 59/3, after her dismissal, at the halfway mark. All-rounders Marizanne Kapp and Kim Garth did just that as the Stars ended at a respectable 141/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Kapp hit three fours in her 14-ball 22 while Garth scored 29 off 19 balls, which included four boundaries as Stars amassed 82 runs in the last 10 overs. Dottin was the pick among the Renegades’ bowlers with a spell of 3/20 in three overs.
In return, Renegades lost opener Davina Perrin cheaply in the second over, but a 58-run second-wicket stand between Courtney Webb (37) and Sophie Molineux (32) kept them in the game. But the batting unit suffered a middle order collapse, slipping from 67/1 to 92/4, losing both set batters in the process. With the required rate going over eight runs an over, skipper Georgia Wareham and Dottin added 21 runs in 10 balls to ease out the pressure. The West Indies all-rounder hit a four and a six during her six-ball 13, while Tess Flintoff (17*) finished the game in style with a six and two boundaries off skipper Annabel Sutherland in the penultimate over. Meanwhile, the pace and spin duo of Garth and Maisy Gibson picked up 2/16 and 2/31, respectively, for the Stars.
