Hattricks are rare feats to perform in cricket, but not for the Services pair of Arjun Sharma and Mohit Jangra. The left-arm spin and pace duo registered the trick in the same innings for the first time in the history of Ranji Trophy, en route to beating Assam in the shortest completed match ever.

‌Services beat Assam by eight wickets in a second round match of the Ranji Trophy in Tinsukia on Sunday. It was the shortest completed match in the history of the premier domestic tournament, with the result coming in the first session of the second day after just 90 overs of play.

Left-arm spinner Arjun Sharma picked up a match haul of nine wickets, while Mohit Jangra and Pulkit Narang scalped four each to restrict Assam to 103 and 75 in their two innings, respectively. In return, the Services also endured a batting collapse to get skittled out for 108 in th first innings, courtesy of Riyan Parag’s five-wicket haul. But they came up with an improved batting performance in the second to chase down the target of 71 runs with ease.

Apart from the shortest match feat, the game also saw a very unique record being registered for the first time in the history of the Ranji Trophy. Arjun and Mohit picked up hattricks in the same innings to go into the history books of the premier domestic event.

Coming in to bowl the 12th over, the left-arm spinner accounted for Riyan Parag, who was caught behind after a juggling effort from keeper Mohit Ahlawat in the third ball. He then sent back Sumit Ghadigaonkar and Sibsankar Roy, both caught in the close-in cordon, in the next two balls to record the trick first.

Mohit, then, cleaned up the tail with his accurate swing bowling to leave Assam tottering at 103/9. He had his wickets split across two overs as he dismissed the home side’s top-scorer Pradyun Saikia (52), first, in the last ball of the 15th over. He returned in his next to send back Mukhtar Hussain and Bhargab Lahkar in the first two balls.
