The T20 World Cup is now a few weeks away but Bangladesh is having a tough time right before the tournament. The team has now received an ultimatum by the ICC, and it may even cost them their place in the same. Fans await what decision will be taken by the ICC in the next few days.

The T20 World Cup 2026 is about to begin in the next few days. But there have been tensions between India and Bangladesh, which have increased to a great extent. The BCB approached the ICC, demanding a change in venue for their matches in the tournament. They also said that they will not play the tournament if their matches are in India.

The tensions grew, as ICC and BCB tried to negotiate on the requirements which had been put forth by the BCB. However, it may not be positive news for the BCB, as ICC has given them an ultimatum. This also puts their spot in the T20 World Cup 2026 in contention, if the board doesn't negotiate with the ICC.

1. BCB Receives Ultimatum

Over the past few months, the BCB and ICC have been in the news for the T20 World Cup drama. Bangladesh does not want to play their T20 World Cup matches in India and wants them to be shifted to Sri Lanka. But the ICC also cannot afford to shift their games to another country right before the tournament is set to begin.

Now, the Bangladesh cricket team has been given a deadline of 21 January. By this date, the board should inform whether they will be playing their matches in India or not. Depending on their decision, the ICC will make a choice. If Bangladesh doesn't want to play their games in India, their spot is likely to be given to Scotland, which is the next best team to participate in the tournament.

The ICC has remained firm that it won't change the venue of Bangladesh's matches, which are currently scheduled in Kolkata and Mumbai. However, BCB wants their team's matches to be shifted to Sri Lanka, citing the security issues if they play in India. It was also reported that the ICC and BCB had a meeting in Dhaka on Saturday, to make the BCB change its stance.

The reports also say that the Bangladesh team wants to change its group from Ireland. This will help them to get their matches scheduled in Sri Lanka. But the ICC has now told that their decision to travel to India shall be decided by 21 January, and it will also decide the fate of their participation in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Bangladesh still said to the ICC that they are not willing to travel to India due to the security threats. But the ICC had confirmed that there are no security threats or harm which could be faced by the team in India. Now a decision on their participation is awaited by the fans, to know what the T20 World Cup holds for them.

2. How the Situation Escalated?

The situation between India and Bangladesh has escalated over the last few months. They have been already present over the last two years, but it has increased more lately. In the IPL auction, several Bangladeshi players participated, and Mustafizur Rahman was able to find a team. He was bought by KKR for a whopping total of 9.20 crore.

But the geopolitical tensions between India and Bangladesh increased to a great extent. Following this, the BCCI directed KKR to remove Rahman from their squad, which was immediately done. And this led to escalation of the matter, as the BCB decided to intervene in the same.

The board appealed that they don't want to play their T20 World Cup matches in India. Demands were made to shift their matches in Sri Lanka, but they seem to have been denied. Till now, these demands do not show a sign to be accepted. But Bangladesh has made itself clear, that they won't be travelling to India to participate in the tournament.

Along with that, an internal turmoil has also taken place in the Bangladesh Cricket Board. A few days back, the former Chief of Finance Committee, Nazmul Islam put some remarks on a former Bangladeshi player. He said that Tamim Iqbal is an Indian agent, and this remark turned out to be a bad one for him.

The BPL matches were boycotted by the players and they demanded Nazmul to resign from his post. The BCB took this decision and the director of the board has now taken over his post. Among the internal turmoils, it remains to be seen whether Bangladesh will remain a part of the T20 World Cup or not.
