A Look Back at India’s Last T20I Match in Visakhapatnam

India and New Zealand will be facing each other today at Visakhapatnam. This will be the 4th T20I match of the series, where India has already won three games. However, a few fans remember what exactly happened when India played its last T20I match at this venue.

The New Zealand tour of India is about to come to an end soon. The second last game of the T20I series will be played at Visakhapatnam, as New Zealand prepares for a comeback. India has been dominant with the bat, which has helped the team to win the series already.

In just three games, India was able to secure easy wins which helped the team to clinch the series. And now, Suryakumar Yadav and co., will be eager to give a whitewash to the Kiwis. This will be the first T20I match being played by India at this venue after more than 2 years. Let's take a look at how India did in the last T20I they played at this venue.

1. India vs Australia, 1st T20I

The last time India played a T20I match at this venue, it was against Australia. And the match goes back to the year 2023, when India had just lost the World Cup final against Australia. Before the tournament, India had an ODI series against Australia, and after the World Cup, both teams were set for a T20I series.

The T20I series started with the first match being played at Visakhapatnam. India was able to win the toss in this game and they decided to field first. This decision didn't turn out in the team's favour, as Australia was able to dominate well against the Indian bowlers.

Ravi Bishnoi was able to take the wicket of Matthew Short, but then the challenge started. Steven Smith and Josh Inglis had an impressive stand that put the Indian team in big trouble. Smith scored 52 runs while Inglis smashed 110 runs against the Indian bowlers. For India, only Ravi Bishnoi and Prasidh Krishna came as the wicket takers.

India had to chase down 209 runs to start the series with a win. Ruturaj Gaikwad lost his wicket in the very first over, being dismissed without even playing a single delivery. Yashasvi Jaiswal also gave a quick start to the team, scoring 21 runs off 8 balls, but he also was not able to stay for long at the crease.

Following this, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav decided to join hands together. Kishan scored 58 runs off 39 balls while Suryakumar Yadav scored 80 runs off 42 balls, which put India close to the win. Rinku Singh remained not out at the score of 22, as the match entered the final over.

There were several miscommunications between the players, which resulted in two run outs and a wicket of Axar Patel. Eventually, India was able to win the game of the very last ball, and take up a lead in the series. Suryakumar Yadav won the Player of the Match award for scoring 80 runs in the chase.

2. Can New Zealand Make a Comeback?

The Visakhapatnam Stadium is being considered as the one which suits the chasing teams more. Out of the 12 T20I matches played at this venue, 9 of them have been won by the team which bowled first. Taking a look at India's all-round line-up, they won't be having any troubles whether they are set to give a target or chase a target.

A positive news for the Indian team is that their captain, Suryakumar Yadav has found his form back. He was not able to bring up even a single half-century in 2025. But now in 2026, he has been the leading run scorer in the T20I series against New Zealand, showcasing his stellar form.

Even in the last match against New Zealand, the Indian bowlers were able to dominate well against the Kiwis. They restricted New Zealand to a low score, and eventually went on to chase the target in just 10 overs. While New Zealand has some experienced players in their line-up, the team has found it challenging to even take the match close.
