West Indies Captain Hayley Matthews Breaks Silence After Semifinal Exit
West Indies Women have been knocked out of the Women's T20 World Cup by Australia. Suffering a devastating loss in the semi-final stages, Hayley Matthews opened up after the same. She talked about the challenges faced by the West Indies Cricket team in the practices.
Australia Women have advanced to the finals of the T20 World Cup. And after this, fans would not see the West Indies Women team in the finals yet again. The match was solely dominated by the Aussies, as they gave no chance to West Indies Women to stage a comeback.
West Indies Women were batting first, and the team went on to post a low total. Noting Australia's batting strength, the team was able to chase down the target with 8 wickets remaining. After this loss, Hayley Matthews, West Indies Women skipper, opened up on the media conference, where she talked about the challenges faced by her team.
She said, “We don’t have pathway programmes in place and then teams like Australia are pushing out Phoebe Litchfields from 15 years old every single year. I feel like it’s a bit unfair sometimes. Within the West Indies, we don’t always have the funds required.”
Our Take
Hayley Matthews has made some massive statements for the West Indies cricket board which now puts them under question. Despite being a full member in the ICC, the team is facing issues with its fundings, which further cause challenges to develop the younger talent. On the other hand, boards such as Cricket Australia, ECB, and BCCI are able to invest heavily on their young talents, which has helped them to win titles over the last few years.
