The Only Top-Order Batsman to Score Less Than Extras in Every Innings of an ODI Series

Cricket history has a weird record which no top order batsman wants to achieve. And it is the record of scoring less than extras in every ODI match in a series. This record is being held by the veteran Indian batsman, Rohit Sharma, as he did the same in 2012.

Cricket has its own list of records. Some of them are untouched for decades as no player managed to come close to them. While the others are untouched because no player wants to come close to them. And one such weird record is a top order batsman scoring less than extras in every single innings of an ODI series.

This record is being held by none other than Rohit Sharma, India's most reliable top order batsman. He achieved this unwanted record in the five match ODI series against Sri Lanka, where he batted in the middle order. Here's how the matches went for Rohit Sharma in that series.

  • 1st ODI - 5 (8)
  • 2nd ODI - 0 (5)
  • 3rd ODI - 0 (1)
  • 4th ODI - 4 (14)
  • 5th ODI - 4 (9)

While this record would have been something which no player wants to achieve, it should be noted that Rohit Sharma batted in the middle order at that time. Further, he was promoted to bat while opening, which helped the Indian team to find one of the most reliable top order batsmen of all-time.

Fortunately after this series, he was also able to take revenge from Sri Lanka, as he went on to score 264 runs against them in an ODI match in 2014. The Hitman transformed to what he is now, after hitting the unrealistic low in the 2012 series against Sri Lanka. While everyone knows that he is a captain who won two ICC trophies for the Indian team, only a few know about his struggles.
