A year after Virat Kohli retired from the Test format, he was a part of an interview on the RCB's page. There he talked about proving his worth, which was indirectly the reason behind his Test retirement. His former teammate, Ravichandran Ashwin, reacted to his statement in a recent video.
Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 will be a series that no Indian fan would ever forget. This series made the team see three players retiring, marking the end of an era. Ravichandran Ashwin retired in the middle of the series and went back to India. Along with that, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired a few months after this series.
The Test retirement of Virat Kohli still hurts the fans even a year after the same. A few days back, RCB posted a video of a podcast featuring Virat Kohli. There he was also asked about the reason behind his Test retirement. Kohli indirectly claimed that he had to prove his worth to the team even after giving so much to the Test side.
To his statements, his former teammate, Ravichandran Ashwin had something to say in his recent video. Ashwin said, “If Virat Kohli is saying that he doesn’t need to prove his worth to anyone, then he is right. There’s nothing left for him to prove to anybody. My thought process was the same too, who do I even have to prove anything to? After playing for so many years and winning many games for India, who does he still need to prove to?”
Our Take
Virat Kohli was surely having a lean patch in the Test format, but he had the grit to make a comeback no one ever expected. He had faced rough patches earlier but never decided that he must step down from the team. In the Test format it turned out to be quite the opposite, as India's best Test captain and finest Test batter in the current generation decided to walk away without a proper farewell. With Ashwin agreeing to his statements, it is clear that he was also unhappy with his retirement.
