The English FA has charged Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho with misconduct for his comments about referee Anthony Taylor ahead of their match against Liverpool earlier this month. The FA has handed over a deadline of October 31 for the Portuguese manager to respond to these charges.

The decision to appoint Anthony Taylor, who is local to the Manchester area, for the match between Liverpool and Manchester United at the Anfield on October 17 came under a lot of criticism. Former referees' chief Keith Hackett had said "it would be intolerable" if there was a disputed call in the derby before the match, while Jose Mourinho felt that it will be difficult for Taylor to perform well given the pressure he had been put under.

"I have my view, but I learned a lesson by being so many times punished by some words, so I don't want to say anything about it.

"I think Mr. Taylor is a very good referee, but I think somebody with intention is putting such a pressure on him that I feel it will be difficult for him to have a very good performance," Mourinho had said before the game which ended in a 0-0 draw.

The FA has now charged Mourinho with misconduct, and he could face suspension from the sidelines if he fails to respond properly.

“Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been charged with misconduct, in respect of comments he made relating to the appointed match referee prior to the Liverpool FC v Manchester United FC fixture on Monday 17 October 2016.

“It is alleged his comments were improper and/or brought the game into disrepute contrary to FA Rule E3(1).

“Mr. Mourinho has until 6pm on Monday 31 October 2016 to respond to the charge,” read the official statement released by the FA.
