Reports | India’s friendly with Jordan cancelled owing to bad weather
All the ordeals that the Indian footballers had to endure to reach the middle-eastern country went to drains as flash floods in Jordan forced the management to call off the match. The Jordan Football Association has announced that the ticket sales from the scheduled match will go to relief funds.
The full 15-member squad had arrived late on Friday in Amman, less than 24 hours to kickoff, after they had to experience an unscheduled diversion to Doha. However, it was followed by further delays as heavy downpour led seven players and a few officials to be stuck at the Kuwait City airport.
It was long distance with India even willing to reschedule the match on to the next day, but it couldn’t be possible with Jordan playing Saudi Arabia on Tuesday. Hence, the team management eventually decided to cancel the match. Even the pre-match press conference, where both Jordan head coach Vital Borkelmans and Stephen Constantine were supposed to be, had to be called off.
Unfortunately, this was India’s only international friendly in the 10-day international break in the ongoing ISL. 97-ranked India’s next friendly would be against Oman on December 27, which is more than a month from now.
The Blue Tigers have been preparing for the AFC Asian Cup where they would be alongside the likes of UAE, Thailand, and Bahrain in their Group A. They could kick it off on 6 January against Thailand at the Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
Editor's Note: After speaking to an official in the AIFF, we have been told that the match will go ahead as scheduled.
