Former Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie has revealed that the North London side never offered him a new contract to stay before he left for Manchester United. The then 29-year old, after spending eight years at Arsenal, left for the Red Devils playing a pivotal part in United's 20th league title.

Van Persie has finally opened the can of worms that was his move from Arsenal to Manchester United in 2012. The then 29-year-old made a rather sensational switch over to Old Trafford, which didn’t go down well with the Arsenal faithful, but it worked out very well for the Dutch international.

He ended up playing an immense role in the 2012/13 title race, which saw Manchester United win a title in Sir Alex Ferguson's last season. However, in a recent interview with BT Sport, the Dutchman went on to reveal everything that happened in that transfer saga leading up to his £22 million move. He added that he was never offered a new deal by Arsenal and only then opted to leave North London.

“You can compare me being at Arsenal to being married. Me and my wife - Arsenal - were married for eight years. After eight years, my wife, possibly got a bit tired of me. Those are the facts. If Arsenal are not offering you a new deal...you can have different views on things but the fact is Arsenal never offered me a new deal," van Persie said in an interaction with BT Sport.

"Then you have to look around. I was ambitious. I still wanted to win the league. That is life. I ended up having three options. One option abroad disappeared quickly. Then it was City or Manchester United. What people don't know, during the transfer, loads of things are happening behind the scenes.

“You have to take a lot on and make a choice based on what your targets are but also deal with the facts. One of the main facts was that Arsenal got tired of me. That was the starting point - they didn't offer me a new deal. We had loads of chats with Wenger, with  Gazidis. They gave me no decision to make," concluded Van Persie.
