I-League is the most important competition in India, says Kibu Vicuna
Mohun Bagan coach Kibu Vicuna has stated that the I-League is the most crucial football tournament. The newly-appointed coach also spoke about the importance of maintaining a good balance between attack and defence and said that will have to take a look at the players to judge the best way forward.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is planning to award the Indian Super League (ISL) the top football competition of India status over the I-League this month. The top I-League clubs are already planning to take the matter to the court. Meanwhile, Mohun Bagan’s newly-appointed coach Kibu Vicuna has not said much in this matter but termed the I-League as the most important one in the country.
“I can't speak about the future. I know the I-League is the official competition. It is the most important competition," Vicuna told IANS.
The Spaniard was appointed as the Mariners’ coach after a disappointing previous I-League season. They had one of their most poor seasons last year after losing to arch-nemesis East Bengal twice in the tournament. The Kolkata-based club finished fifth on the table with 29 points from 20 games. The club has also roped in Spanish defender Fran Morante and striker Salva Chamorro for the upcoming season of Indian club football. Talking about their inclusion, the coach said that the Spaniards are very flexible on the pitch.
“Spanish players are very flexible. They adapt quickly. My philosophy of attacking football needs a solid central defender. Both the foreigners we have recruited so far are very good players. I am happy with both transfers," the Mohun Bagan coach explained.
"I like to keep a balance between attack and defence. I will have to see the players and then judge the best way forward. Every coach has a different style.”
Mohun Bagan are planning to hold a pre-season camp in India before the beginning of the prestigious Calcutta Football League Premier Division from this month.
"We will go for 10 days. It will be in India," Vicuna concluded.
