According to reports from Goal, NorthEast United FC defender Mato Grgic is close to joining Mumbai City FC under the management of Jorge Costa ahead of next season. The Highlanders have already parted ways with coach Eelco Schattorie and star striker Bartholomew Ogbeche this summer.

NorthEast United FC had a good season in the league after years and it is costing them dearly it seems. The exodus that the club is enduring could irrecoverable with the latest name to exit has been centre-half Grgic.

The 31-year-old Croatian had been one of the NEUFC’s better and consistent players in his debut season as the Highlanders reached the playoffs for the very first time in the history of the competition. He played 20 times last season and was a crucial part of Schattorie’s systematic passing play.

He was also the skipper of the side in the second leg of their playoff game against Bengaluru FC in the absence of Ogbeche due to a hamstring injury and continued that in their Super Cup quarter-final defeat against Chennaiyin FC.

Grgic has previously played for MTK Budapest and formed a formidable pairing alongside compatriot Mislav Komorski in the first half of the 2018-19 season before his partner got injured. It has also been reported that exciting midfielder Rowlin Borges would be moving to Mumbai City as well after spending three seasons with NorthEast United.
