Scott McTominay says he is extremely impressed by young defender Brandon Williams and is happy to see him make first team appearances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The academy product Williams made his debut when he replaced Phil Jones at half-time in the Carabao Cup tie against Rochdale in September.

Manchester United player Scott McTominay has admitted that starlet Brandon Williams is a brilliant player and needs to be given more chances to shine. The 19-year-old Williams was given the first start of his Red Devils career against AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa League and did relatively well. Not only that Tahith Chong, James Garner and Mason Greenwood have all made first-team debuts under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the last year.

“I thought he did brilliantly. I said to him before the game to just be himself and told him he had nothing to worry about. I told him to go and play the game like it was a Reserves match or he was playing in the park with his mates… you don’t want to think too much about it, you just need to go out, express yourself, show what you can do and that’s what he did,” McTominay told Manchester United.

The British midfielder himself has risen through the ranks at Manchester United and knows how it feels to come through from the academy. Brandon Williams has followed a similar path, despite the Old Trafford club being held to an ugly goalless draw in the Netherlands, Williams caught the eye of fans and pundits. His brave performance against Alkmaar also saw him being nominated for the Man of the Match award.

“Obviously, we didn’t create as many chances as we hoped but we still got a point away from home and didn’t concede again so they’re positives we can take. And, of course, Brandon was a big, big plus and I’m very pleased for him. To have a game like that this early in his career is great.” concluded McTominay.
