Football continues to grow among Indian fans, as the Indian Super League continues to play a crucial role in the game. As the growth of the sport continues, the former Ireland player and former coach of Kerala Blasters, Terry Phelan talked about some points which could help in the growth of the sport in the country.

He talked about the challenges being faced by Indian football and the structural reforms which are needed to help the sport grow. Phelan said that the country needs to have youth development for the sport, along with a community engagement, with all having a common dream for India to participate in the FIFA World Cup.

Although the Indian Super League played a crucial role for the growth of football among Indian fans, Phelan also posed some questions to the same. He said,“Has it truly elevated the sport in a meaningful way? “We need to introduce a promotion and relegation system.”

He further continued talking about the structure of the tournament as unhealthy for the Indian football, saying,“Joining the ISL costs a lot of money, and sustaining a team requires funding and sponsorships. What’s the point of promoting teams if they collapse after six or seven months? That’s not healthy football.”
