AIFF Engages with I-League Clubs to Address Challenges and Plan for the Future

In a meeting between AIFF and I-League clubs, key concerns were discussed, including travel costs, venue compliance, and club licensing. Clubs urged for regional fixtures to reduce expenses and a more balanced approach to administrative requirements. Refereeing standards and VAR were also debated. Additionally, clubs called for a promotion-relegation system, expansion of the I-League, and improved youth development.

To elevate the standard of Indian football, the AIFF held an important meeting with I-League clubs on February 3, 2025, at Raj Mansingh Hotel in Delhi. The meeting, led by AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, aimed to address key concerns such as financial sustainability, competition structure, refereeing standards, youth development, and the future of the I-League. I-League clubs raised issues about the high cost of travel, venue compliance, and club licensing, urging the AIFF to reconsider stringent requirements.

The clubs also discussed the need for better refereeing, including the possible implementation of VAR within budgetary constraints. Moreover, the clubs pushed for more balanced disciplinary policies to avoid excessive fines. Youth development was another critical topic, with a suggestion to have state associations manage U-15 and U-13 leagues to provide more localized and competitive opportunities for young talent.

Additionally, clubs called for an expansion of both the I-League and ISL and the introduction of a clear promotion-relegation system to foster competitiveness. The AIFF responded positively, promising to review existing policies and work towards a more inclusive footballing ecosystem in India, with ongoing discussions to refine the future structure of leagues and youth development.
