Canada secured a 1-0 victory over South Africa to book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16. After dominating possession and creating several chances, Jesse Marsch's side finally found the breakthrough in stoppage time when Stephen Eustaquio scored in the 90+2 minute.
For the first time in their history, Canada booked a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after edging South Africa 1-0 in a tense Round of 32 clash at Los Angeles. Jesse Marsch's side dominated much of the contest but had to wait until stoppage time before finally breaking the deadlock through Stephen Eustaquio's dramatic winner in the 90+2nd minute.
Canada controlled the attacking play throughout the match and created several clear chances. Derek Cornelius missed a free header from close range in the 21st minute, while Jonathan David was denied by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams before Mbekezeli Mbokazi cleared another effort off the line in the 66th minute. Richie Laryea also appealed for a penalty late in the first half, but both the referee and VAR dismissed the claims. South Africa remained disciplined in defence and frustrated Canada for more than 90 minutes despite enjoying 58 percent possession for long spells without creating many dangerous opportunities.
Alphonso Davies made his first appearance of the tournament in the 75th minute after missing the group stage and helped Canada increase the pressure down the left flank. With extra time looming, Eustaquio finally found the breakthrough in added time, smashing home the winning goal to seal a hard fought 1-0 victory and send Canada into the Round of 16, while South Africa's spirited World Cup campaign came to a heartbreaking end.
