Portugal Back Experience and Versatility for World Cup 2026
Roberto Martínez has named a 27 member Portugal squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Cristiano Ronaldo set for a record sixth World Cup at 41. The squad focuses on experience, tactical flexibility and attacking depth.
Portugal will play warm up matches against the Chile national football team and Nigeria national football team.
For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Portugal coach Roberto Martínez has selected a 27 member squad built around experience, tactical flexibility and trusted names rather than surprise inclusions. The biggest headline is the selection of Cristiano Ronaldo, who is set to play in his 6th World Cup at the age of 41. Goalkeeper Ricardo Velho has also been included as extra cover, although only 26 players can officially be registered unless injuries occur.
Martínez preferred continuity and versatility, with players capable of adapting to multiple roles during a demanding tournament across the United States, Mexico and Canada. The squad includes experienced stars such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Rafael Leão, alongside flexible options like João Cancelo, Diogo Dalot and Matheus Nunes.
Portugal’s midfield offers balance through creativity, control and defensive strength, while the attack combines pace, movement and finishing quality. Martínez also paid tribute to late forward Diogo Jota, calling him the squad’s symbolic “plus one.” Portugal will play warm up matches against Chile on 6 June and Nigeria on 10 June before beginning their Group K campaign against DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia.
